Deliverability: A Big Contact File Is Not an Asset

Authentication is the easy half. Consent, freshness and suppression decide whether next month’s blast reaches the inbox.

Deliverability is a reputation system that remembers. Recipient behavior — who opens, who complains, who never engages — determines where your future sends land, which means the list you never clean is a liability you carry into every campaign after it.

Put it to work

  1. Verify SPF, DKIM and DMARC on the sending domain before the next send.
  2. Make one-click unsubscribe work and honor it instantly.
  3. Keep one permanent suppression list and check every import against it.
  4. Pause sending when bounce or complaint rates move sharply, and find out why before sending again.

What to watch

Send from a dedicated domain or subdomain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC configured, and do not send brokerage marketing from the same domain as your transaction email. One bad list should not be able to damage your closing correspondence.

Suppress globally, permanently. Hard bounces, complaints and unsubscribes have to be blocked across every future list, because the standard failure is re-importing a suppressed address from a different spreadsheet next quarter.

Warm a new sending domain gradually and watch delivery quality before increasing batch size. A first send of 15,000 from a cold domain is the most reliable way to land in spam permanently.

Document the source and consent basis of every list on the day it is imported. A compiled list and your own past clients cannot be sent to the same way, and if you cannot tell which is which, you have to treat all of it as the riskier one.

Watch for the quiet failure: delivery looks fine, opens fall, replies stop. That is usually a reputation slide rather than a content problem, and it is why you track replies over time rather than judging each campaign alone.
